Resolutions…Or Rather Focuses…For 2010

I’ve never been a big fan of setting “New Years’ Resolutions” so instead I’m going to make a concerted effort at being better at some specific things. In no particular order they are:

1. Read more. I own a lot of books. Novels, fiction/non-fiction, business books, computer programming books, etc and a lot of them are sitting on my shelves, unopened collecting dust. I bought them because I was honestly interested in reading them (and with my list of must buy books growing) I’d like to read the ones I have before adding any more to my collection. A few books of particular note that I’m excited to read are: Traffic, The Selfish Gene, I Know This Much is True, Predictably Irrational, and The Flyers. There are more but those are the ones that jump to mind.

2. Exercise more. I live in a beautiful part of Calgary and it’s awesome to run along the river. Along with the standard stretching, core work and yoga, I want to run more. As simple as it sounds, putting it into practice does take some dedication – especially when working from home since my schedule is not as consistent as you would think.

3. Continue following my heart, my passions and my dreams. 2009 was a big year for me in that I started a great new job, and then a few months later left that great new job. For anyone who has ever not gone out one night because you say you’re “broke”, you probably are exaggerating a bit. By following my passions, I’ve learned what it’s like to really not have any money sometimes…trying living on $5 a week some weeks. Yeah, not so simple. But doing what I love to do has always worked out and I just have to have faith that it will continue to bring me what I want in life. I talk a lot about how important it is to do what you love, and this short audio clip starring Apple’s Steve Jobs really captures what I talk about: Alexander Hamilton – Steve Jobs

4. That’s all I really have thought out for now. Perhaps I’ll update this as I think of more. I believe that’s a pretty good start and if it becomes that, an ending as well.

I hope that you all take time to reflect back on the year that was 2009, good or bad, and try to figure out what you learned, how you will apply that to 2010 and how it will help you get what you want out of life.

Cheers!
